About Maria
Maria Mahecha is a therapist-in-training completing her internship at Harmony Counselling while pursuing her Master of Counselling Psychology (MACP) at Yorkville University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Windsor, along with a certification in Child and Youth Mental Health from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her academic and clinical training includes work in anxiety, depression, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and supporting at-risk youth.
Maria offers her virtual counselling services to youth, adults, families and adults under the supervision of Lorena Patrucco, RP and clinical supervisor at Harmony Counselling. She has a particular interest in helping individuals better understand and navigate their emotional experiences, with a focus on fostering stability and resilience. She is also passionate about working with children and supporting parents in building more connected, balanced relationships within the home.
Her approach is person-centred and grounded in a humanistic, relational framework. She integrates evidence-based modalities such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and the development of practical coping strategies. Maria’s work is further informed by her interest in child development and resilience, including helping adults understand how early life experiences shape emotions, relationships, and self-development.
Maria is committed to creating a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where clients can feel comfortable being themselves. She believes that meaningful change is built through connection, consistency, and small, achievable steps over time.
