Thanks for stopping by. I'm Karen.
I live in Fernie with my husband and our three kids. If you're trying to balance a demanding career while raising a family, I understand how relentless that juggling act can be. Like a lot of people, I'm sometimes thriving and other times just trying to remember why I walked into the kitchen. If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company.
I've spent more than 20 years working at the intersection of education and counselling. Along the way, I've learned that people make a whole lot more sense when someone takes the time to really understand their story. Over the years, I've had the privilege of supporting boys and men with ADHD, emotional regulation challenges, anxiety, and school-related struggles, as well as the families who love them.
One of my greatest passions has been working with boys who have hated school since Kindergarten. You know the ones? Bright, hilarious, endlessly creative, and somehow always in trouble. The kids with enormous hearts who often spend more time hearing what's "wrong" with them than what's wonderful about them. I love these kids. Over the past two decades they've taught me just as much as I've taught them.
Do you live with one of those boys? It can be exhausting, confusing, and incredibly lonely to love a child who seems to be misunderstood everywhere they go. I've spent two decades listening to these kids, advocating for them, and helping families understand how to build confidence and resilience in a world that isn't always designed for the way they learn and experience life. I'd be honoured to share some of what I've learned with you.
Maybe you were one of those boys?
The one who couldn't sit still. Who was always told to "try harder," "pay attention," or "apply yourself." Maybe school left you believing you were lazy, difficult, or never quite enough.
Those boys grow up. Many become adults who are bright and capable but constantly second-guess themselves. They may struggle with relationships, anxiety, anger, or turning to alcohol or drugs to quiet minds that rarely slow down. None of that means there's something wrong with them. More often, they've spent years believing they were "too much" or "not enough." The strategies that helped them survive childhood don't always serve them as adults, but they can change.
While I work with individuals, couples, and families facing a wide range of life's challenges, I have a particular passion for supporting boys and men who have spent too much of their lives feeling misunderstood. My style is warm, collaborative, and down-to-earth. Counselling doesn't have to feel clinical or intimidating. Sometimes it looks like laughter through tears, honest conversations, practical strategies, and having someone beside you while you figure things out.
I also have the privilege of providing clinical supervision to helping professionals. If you're a newer counsellor, you may have discovered that graduate school teaches theories, diagnoses, and treatment models but it doesn't always prepare you for the moments that keep you awake at night.
A 14-year-old tells you they're suicidal. A 16-year-old trusts you enough to disclose an eating disorder but begs you not to tell anyone. You're trying to balance ethics, risk, relationships, and your own self-doubt all at once.
After more than 20 years of this work, I don't pretend there are easy answers. What I do offer is a place to think deeply, reflect honestly, strengthen your clinical judgment, and become the kind of counsellor who responds with both confidence and compassion. Supervision isn't about having all the answers; it's about learning how to ask better questions and trust yourself in the process.
Whatever brings you here, I believe change begins when people feel understood rather than judged. Whether you're seeking counselling or clinical supervision, my hope is that you'll find a space where you can show up exactly as you are. No perfection required.
