Accepting New Clients - In-person and Virtual
-- Most of us come to therapy because we’ve been hurt by those who should be in therapy. While this can feel unfair and frustrating it means that you are breaking the generational patterns of avoidance and lack of accountability that others are afraid of! How iconic!
I can relate to the struggles of having immigrant caregivers who may have wanted the best for you but their tools for encouragement may have been punitive, isolating and controlling. As a child, this may have looked like taking up as little space as possible, perfectionism, or being the ‘good’ obedient child. As an adult, this may look like self-doubt, people pleasing, codependency and identity confusion.
Accepting that your caregivers did the best they could with the tools they had can be difficult. But these untended wounds can still heal regardless of how much time has passed and this does not have to be your pattern forever.
My experience working in the field of addiction and co-occurring disorders has informed my approach. I have a profound understanding and empathy for how feeling those difficult feelings can cause even more pain and have seen how we may engage in unhealthy behaviours to shove them down. Together we can talk about what has always been unspoken: your feelings, thoughts and pain. Our space is all ABOUT you and FOR you to work on accepting the past and not letting it define who you are today. Let’s work together to let go of the things holding you back from the life that you want for yourself and celebrate those successes along the way!
