“Our experience at this hospital was extremely disappointing, not because of the medical care itself, but because of how we were treated by one staff member. We were placed in a very small room that was completely different from the other examination rooms. While other rooms appeared to have proper equipment and seating, ours only had a bed and a single chair, even though there were three of us. I politely asked for one additional chair. The staff member told us to wait, but after more than 30 minutes, nothing was brought. When I asked again, she responded impatiently and said she had “more important things to do” and that getting us a chair was not important. During that time, I saw her delivering blankets and other items to other rooms, yet she continued to ignore our request. After waiting for nearly an hour, we eventually found extra chairs sitting in the hallway near her station and had to bring one ourselves. It would have taken only a few seconds for her to help us, but she chose not to. When I asked why our room was different from everyone else’s, I was given inconsistent explanations. First, she said it was because we were the last patients called, which was simply not true—we were actually the first family called among the three patients who were called at that time. She then changed her explanation and said it was because we didn’t need oxygen. However, none of the other children I observed appeared to be receiving oxygen either, and my child was being evaluated for suspected croup, a condition that can involve breathing difficulties. The explanations did not make sense and only added to my frustration. Later, after we had already been waiting for hours, I asked whether my child should continue fasting in case blood work was needed, since he had not eaten anything all morning. Instead of simply explaining that the doctor would decide, she responded loudly and impatiently, saying, “How would I know? You haven’t seen the doctor yet.” Throughout the entire visit, we were treated with unnecessary hostility and disrespect. As an Asian family, the way we were repeatedly dismissed, ignored, and spoken to made us feel singled out and unwelcome. I cannot say for certain what motivated her behavior, but it left us feeling that we were treated differently from other patients. No family seeking medical care for a sick child should be treated this way. I sincerely hope the hospital will review this incident and ensure that all patients are treated with the same level of respect and professionalism.”Read moreShow less

“I had an amazing experience delivering my second baby in the Midwifery Unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital. This was my second birth, and I can honestly say my experience this time was so different in the best possible way. Throughout my pregnancy, my appointments were consistent and professional, similar to what you would expect with an OB. However, what truly set this experience apart was the level of care I received during labour, delivery, and postpartum. The labour and delivery rooms themselves were also excellent. They were comfortable, well equipped, and created such a calm and supportive environment, which made a huge difference during labour. The midwives were incredibly attentive, supportive, and compassionate throughout my entire labour. They not only provided excellent medical care, but also offered constant emotional support, which made such a huge difference. I chose to have an unmedicated birth, and I genuinely do not think I could have done it without the encouragement, reassurance, and calm presence of the midwifery team. They made me feel heard, respected, and completely supported in my birth choices. I never felt rushed or alone. Someone was always there guiding me, checking in on me, and helping me stay focused. The postpartum care was just as wonderful. One moment that really stood out to me was when one of the midwives watched my baby for two hours so I could get some much needed rest. That level of kindness and support meant so much to me during such a vulnerable time. The follow up and attention I received after delivery made me feel cared for not just as a patient, but as a person adjusting to life with a new baby. I am so grateful for the incredible team in the Midwifery Unit and would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering midwifery care. “My husband (85)was admitted recently due to a head trauma. Despite the shortage of beds and nursing staff they did their best. Was 2 days in emergency, and eventually moved to rehab/stroke unit. He passed away 4 days later. Although response tine for assistance was often very slow, the overall experience was positive. Would recommend that a family member stay with patient especially during day as often it was necessary to beg for assistance as they were busy and response time sometimes very long. Also a family member should be there at meal times if patient needs help specially with opening hot food containers etc. Nurses once they attended, were all caring and attentive, but rushed off their feet. Also heartbreaking was that since he was admitted 1 am Sunday morning no outside doctor was available to do the swallowing test until Monday late morning. He went without even a sip of water for almost 38 hours as his last drink was 6 pm Saturday .I fully understand the reason but a doctor should be on call even on a weekend. It was cruel to let him wait for so long because of a lack of a doctor who could conduct this test in a hospital full of doctors. I particularly want to thank Dr.Li in Rehab wing. He was the most empathetic and caring doctor I ever met. Again run off his feet but he took great pains in explaining the situation with empathy, kindness and patience answering all our questions., specially during my husband last 2 days when he was comatose and the end was near. We are so grateful to the hospital and Dr. Li for moving him to a private room so his whole family and friends could be with him. Hopefully the Government will listen to pleas from patients and families to help hospitals to improve care when people are desperate that their loved ones receive the best care.”Read moreShow less

“Got my appendix removed here. The emergency wait is long, but still faster than any other hospitals within the 20 kilo radius. Doctors and staffs are polite, professional. Very glad I came here for my surgery and follow up appointments.”

“This is the best hospital in the GTA by far. They are very well organized. I have been to a lot of hospital and this one the wait time is between 1-2 hours. The doctors and the whole nursing team and front desk were so organized. I felt like I went to a private hospital. When my son went inside there were like 5-6 people helping him. I've never seen that many staff serving 1 person in a hospital. They do the x-ray, then right away they treat you unless hospital wait for 2 hours for the results. Results came within 5 minutes and your doctor is looking after you right away. You go to other hospital one doctor looking after 20-40 patients at the same time. Even if I had to pay to go to this hospital I would rather pay than going to any other hospital before here. 10/10 services here.”Read moreShow less

“My dad wasn't feeling well in his abdominal area. Came to MSH coz it's the closest hospital. After about 4 days at the ER inpatient room (waiting for MRI), he was transferred in the middle of the night (1:30AM) to the Oncology ward. Instead of putting him in a clean empty room, they placed him in the Hallway!! And we are told they "don't" have beds!! Really?!! There's an EMPTY CLEAN FREE ROOM WITH TWO BEDS! “From the front line to the back, every medical staff member at Markham Stouffville Hospital was kind, attentive, and professional. They took my family member’s condition seriously and ensured she was properly assessed upon arrival to the Emergency. Everyone was very busy, yet still doing their best to provide care and support to all patients, it’s truly not easy, and it’s deeply appreciated. A very good hospital with truly caring staff. “My overall experience at Markham Stouffville Hospital was extremely disappointing. My grandmother did not receive proper or consistent care during her stay, likely due to short staffing or lack of adequate funding. Daily operations were poorly managed and inconsistent. On multiple occasions, my grandmother used the call button to request assistance, only for it to be turned off by a nurse instead of receiving help. Physiotherapy support was also extremely limited — she was seen by physio only about three times over the course of an entire month, which is unacceptable given her condition. Unfortunately, some of the regular nursing staff appeared disengaged and unwilling to properly care for patients. In several instances, patient care was delegated to student nurses. Ironically, the student nurses demonstrated better ethics, attentiveness, and compassion than some of the senior staff. Overall, there was a clear lack of accountability, empathy, and patient-centered care. I could go on, but the bottom line is that my grandmother received very poor care. “I love this hospital so much, I live in Oshawa and make the drive out here if it’s possible even though I live 5 minutes away from Oshawa hospital. At Markham hospital they are fast and efficient and majority of the people that work here are the sweetest, I recently gave birth here via emergency c-section, I have never seen hospital staff work so quick, if it was not for the nurses and doctors in L&D I would not have survived. My baby required some time in the nicu and oh my lord the staff in the nicu have my heart, my baby wouldn’t have made it without them, my birth story was very traumatic for all me, my boyfriend, my mom, and baby girl, all the staff were so comforting and supportive during the entire process. Huge thank you to Dr. Zeni(L&D), all the nurses who were part of my c-section(it all happened so fast there was no time for introductions), all the postpartum nurses, Dr. Sharma(nicu), and all the nurses my baby had in the nicu. An extra huge thank you to Kim(nicu) she resuscitated my daughter and is genuinely one of the most sweetest nurse in the nicu, she came to check on me in the postpartum unit, Kim really made our experience in the nicu. If me and my boyfriend decide to have another baby in the future I will definitely be giving birth here again, and although I never want to experience being in the nicu again, if I had to I’d definitely choose here again over anywhere else.”Read moreShow less
