“Burton Manor was my father’s home for less than two years. My experience was mixed with both very frustrating challenges and some genuinely compassionate staff at the end of his life. During the first year, I struggled with getting staff to consistently understand my father’s preferences and care needs, as well as my own requests for his well-being. Most staff were friendly and warm, but many seemed overworked or simply there to do their job rather than fully engage in care. There were repeated issues where basic requests were not followed, such as leaving the TV on for him for comfort, turning him as directed by doctors to relieve pressure on a wound, and using an electric shaver I provided instead of a razor that cut his face. These may seem like small things, but they mattered a lot in his daily comfort. Communication and consistency of care were my biggest frustrations. My father was bedbound due to a severe pressure wound and had advanced dementia, so small routines were very important. Specifically, instructions about swallowing safety, such as keeping him upright for 30 minutes after eating, this had to be repeated often, and I still witnessed instances where he was laid down immediately after meals. I had to repeat myself countless times that it is a matter of life and death for him if he is laid down too soon. Another ongoing issue was the constant turnover of staff. I frequently saw new faces each week. While I understand staffing challenges, it was difficult for both my father and our family. For someone with dementia, constantly adjusting to unfamiliar caregivers can be confusing and distressing, and it also made it harder to build trust and consistency in care. The food quality was also disappointing. Meals often consisted of processed and canned vegetables, boxed mashed potatoes, and canned fruits swimming in syrup, and of course, puddings. Desserts listed on the menu were not always what was served, and overall the food felt very institutional. The building itself was clean and maintained, and my father’s private room was spacious. However, the rooms and overall facility felt dated and somewhat depressing in appearance. Despite all of this, there were also meaningful positives. In his final period and after his passing, I saw a strong sense of compassion from many staff members. Several came from other floors to say goodbye, and many offered sincere condolences and support. It was clear that many of the long-term staff truly cared for the residents and formed real connections with them. Overall, this is a very mixed review. There were serious concerns around consistency of care, communication, and staffing stability, but also moments of genuine kindness and compassion from staff who were clearly doing their best in a very demanding environment. Families should be prepared to advocate consistently for their loved ones to ensure their needs are met.”

“Having a loved one in need of a facility is always a stressful time. We have been blessed to have had a good experience. The staff are much more attentive and keep to a schedule that we were not finding at the hospital. The rooms are spacious enough and you can rent their rooms for family functions with your loved one.”

“This place is amazing. Very clean and always smells great. The staff are angels; they are compassionate, caring, kind and loving. They work very hard taking care of our loved ones, they put up with so much in the dementia unit, but always have a smile on their face. We are grateful to the nurses, PSWs, and the rest of the staff for all the love, attention, and amazing care given to my mom. It was a blessing when a bed became available. Thank you Dina”

“Moving a parent into long-term care is one of the hardest decisions a family can make, but the team at Burton Manor has made the transition incredibly smooth. My father has been here for a little while now, and we have been thoroughly impressed with the level of dignity, respect, and attentive care he receives daily. The staff are the real standout here. They aren't just doing a job; they genuinely care about the residents' well-being and comfort. From the nursing and support staff to the administration, communication has been clear, proactive, and compassionate, keeping our family well-informed and at ease. The facility is clean, well-managed, and offers a welcoming environment where my father feels safe and properly looked after. Knowing he is in such capable and kind hands has given our family immense peace of mind. I highly recommend Burton Manor to anyone looking for excellent long-term care for their loved ones.”

“My husband moved into Burton Manor almost 2 years ago. From the very beginning I have been impressed with the dedication, professionalism, caring and kindness of all of the staff. I visit frequently and on every occasion I receive a friendly greeting from every staff member I see, which I really appreciate and I witness the caring way in which all the staff interacts with each of the residents. I feel that everyone there strives to create as home-like and comfortable an environment as possible. Making the decision to move my husband into long-term-care was difficult, even though it was absolutely necessary. I greatly appreciate that all the staff treats my self and my husband with dignity and kindness; in full awareness of and compassion for the challenge to the entire family when a love one moves into care. I also appreciate that there is always a lot of activity going on in my husband's neighbourhood. Those residents that are able are out and about in the hallways and there are always a lot of staff in sight. When my father had to move into long-term-care I really wanted him to move into Burton Manor, but sadly that was not possible. The care he received where he was placed was Ok but in comparison, Burton Manor is leagues above in terms of creating an environment that feels active and vibrant. The staff are also very good a keeping me informed of any changes in my husbands condition and care needs. I feel extremely grateful that my husband is in Burton Manor; knowing that he is receiving excellent care lifts a large burden from my shoulders and makes this challenging time easier to bear.”

“I recently completed my PSW student placement at Burton Manor Nursing Home, and I can confidently say it is one of the warmest and most welcoming environments I have ever worked in. From day one, the atmosphere reflected genuine compassion not just toward residents, but also toward students and staff. The open-door policy practiced by management and team leaders makes communication easy and encourages learning, growth, and collaboration. Everyone is approachable, supportive, and committed to creating a positive home for the residents. One unforgettable moment during my placement was the visit from the Minister of Long-Term Care, **Natalia Kusendova-Bashta**. Watching the team in action that day, from **Swamy, the Executive Director**, to the entire management and staff, I witnessed dedication, professionalism, organization, and true accountability. Their pride in the work they do and the love they have for the residents was unmistakable. The connection they share with residents is heartwarming—I could feel it myself every single day I was there. Throughout my placement, I had the privilege of learning under outstanding preceptors in both Nursing home section and Recreation. They took the time to teach, explain routines, demonstrate procedures, and guide me through the do’s, don’ts, and most importantly, the reasons behind every action. “My father has been living at Burton Manor (Sunny Orchard section) since December 2023. At the beginning there were challenges in the admission process, getting to know the policies and the staff, especially during Christmas season. Admitting a loved one to LTC is an extremely stressful time for everyone. We chose this home carefully and we are very happy with our decision. The staff and environment is very loving and they really try to keep the residents well looked after. Safety and comfort is very important at Burton and they like to get to know the residents personal likes/dislikes. This home is kept very clean and extremely sanitary, so it makes it more pleasant for visitations. The social and physical therapy staff try to engage the residents into activities and the home is always cheerfully decorated for every season/occasion. The Burton team (under Swamy's leadership) works very hard in trying to manage the home efficiently. We all know that it is a difficult job looking after the frail and vulnerable elderly during their final journey. The care team at Burton understand this and a very special shout out to the PSW's at this home, especially Josie, Grace and others who take care of our dad lovingly. The nursing staff, nutritionist, and all the support workers truly care about the residents and try to communicate to the family as required. The family feels fortunate to have our dad in this loving environment. Of course nothing is perfect and mistakes can happen, because everyone is human, but we feel comfort that our dad is extremely well cared for at Burton Manor. If you are reviewing this home, I would recommend it be on your list for consideration if you have a loved one needing future care.”

“I can’t say enough good things about this long-term care home. My dad has been here for a while, and I’ve always felt reassured knowing he’s in a safe and caring environment. The administrator, Swamy, does an amazing job running the home with professionalism and a personal touch. The staff, go above and beyond to ensure residents are happy and engaged in meaningful activities. It’s clear that they genuinely care about the well-being of everyone in their care. I’m so grateful to see my dad thriving here and would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a compassionate and well-managed place for their loved one.”
